Pixel pitch explained: which LED wall for your exhibition stand?

P2.6, P2.9 or P3.9? What pixel pitch means, how it relates to viewing distance and resolution, and how to prepare content that looks sharp on your LED wall.

When you rent an LED wall, the spec sheet starts with a code such as P2.6, P2.9 or P3.9. That number — the pixel pitch — decides how sharp your stand looks to the people standing in front of it.

What pixel pitch means

The pixel pitch is the distance, in millimetres, between the centres of two neighbouring LED pixels. P2.6 means 2.6 mm. The smaller the pitch, the more pixels per square metre and the sharper the image at short distance.

The viewing-distance rule of thumb

A simple rule works well on trade fair stands: the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly the pitch in millimetres. Closer than that, the eye starts to distinguish individual pixels.

PitchComfortable fromBest for
P2.6~2.5 mStands where visitors stand close to the wall
P2.9~3 mMost stand backdrops
P3.9~4 mStages, large halls, entrances

Think about where people actually stop: the demo counter, the aisle, the seats in front of a stage. If the closest point is three metres away, P2.9 is the sweet spot — paying for a finer pitch would add cost without a visible benefit.

Pitch and resolution

Our LED walls are built from 50×50 cm cabinets. The pitch sets how many pixels each cabinet holds, and therefore the resolution of the whole wall:

PitchPixels per cabinet3×2 m wall4×2.5 m wall
P2.6192 × 1921152 × 7681536 × 960
P2.9168 × 1681008 × 6721344 × 840
P3.9128 × 128768 × 5121024 × 640

An LED wall rarely matches a standard video format such as 1920 × 1080. That is normal — the video processor scales the signal — but content designed at the wall's native resolution always looks best.

Brightness matters too

Pitch is about sharpness; brightness is about legibility. Indoor walls deliver around 1,500 nits, enough for brightly lit halls. Outdoor areas need up to 5,000 nits to stay readable in daylight.

How to prepare your content

  1. Ask for the native resolution of your configuration and design at exactly that size.
  2. Export MP4 (H.264) at 25, 30 or 50 fps and avoid unusual codecs.
  3. Keep text large and high-contrast. As a guide, letters should be at least 30–40 pixels tall on P3.9.
  4. Avoid thin lines and fine patterns, which can shimmer on LED.
  5. Use dark backgrounds to your advantage. LEDs make blacks deep and colours vivid, which suits motion graphics and brand films.
  6. Test before the fair. We preview your files during set-up and adjust scaling and colour on site.

In short

Choose the pitch from the viewing distance, not from the spec sheet. For most stands P2.9 is the right balance; go to P2.6 when visitors stand very close, and to P3.9 for stages and large spaces.
